Experience the captivating calm of a Sacred Sound Therapy session
Himalayan metal singing bowls are used in a sound massage to gently open, cleanse & balance energy centers. The sound emitted by the bowls creates deep vibrations that encourage body cells, organs & systems to re-tune and vibrate at their normal healthy frequencies. The rich blend of harmonic overtones naturally invokes deep relaxation, stress reduction and altered states of consciousness. It has been suggested that the tones produced by the bowls affects left brain/right brain synchronization, creating a balancing effect.
History
According to Tibetan oral tradition, singing bowls came to Tibet from India where metal-working artisans perfected the techniques for making the bowls nearly 2,500 years ago. Originally composed of a seven metal alloy (gold, copper, iron, lead, mercury, silver, & tin), they were cast, reheated and hammered into shape & tone. Bowls are frequently used as a meditation aid to reinforce the important concept of being "mindful" and staying in the present moment. In Buddhism, and in Hinduism, sound is an important part of spiritual practice. Sound and vibrations are also associated with wellness. Alternative/complementary medicine theories associate good health with a person being "in balance". The sound made by Himalayan Singing bowls may be used to create vibrations believed to bring harmony to a person who is not in balance.
Since 1991, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, a New York City integrative oncologist has incorporated singing bowls in his work with cancer patients. He and others are documenting the impact of sound and vibration, conducting research and publishing findings. Musicians and music therapists continue to bring new understanding to the power of sound.
What to Expect
A typical session last approximately 40 to 45 minutes for $50.00 Clients remain fully clothed. Work is traditionally done on a floor mat. However adjustments can be made to insure comfort and working with a massage table is an option.
Sessions begin with the sound of Tibetan Tingshaws (small hand held cymbals) used in a diagnostic technique. Bowls are positioned around the head and placed in various locations on the body. The therapist will strike the bowls, or run a wooden mallet along the rim to produce sound & vibration. Occasionally, a Ghanta & Vajra (ritual bell & diamond scepter) will be used during a session. The sound of the bell is motivational, stimulating change.
Although a single session can produce deep relaxation, a series of four weekly sessions are highly recommended to achieve a maximum effect.
